Whilst restoring a model of a wooden sailing ship that had seen better days, I learned that those magnificent vessels were almost as much cloth and rope as they were wood. The “Scottish Maid” was a fast ship designed to carry cargo and compete with the steam powered craft that were making their appearance in the early 19th century. With two masts and 10 sails, she was a complex machine, every bit as beautiful as she was speedy.
