Yes and no.
While young women should have absolute say over what happens to their bodies, we also have to come to terms with the fact that it takes a while for children to mature and to understand who and what they are. In that regard, a child who is maturing into a young adult needs clear guidelines and direction. Ideally, this is accomplished through modelling of a healthy relationship between their parents, and by those parents talking to their children about the changes they are undergoing, and listening to their children as they make their worries and needs known. Hopefully, there will be a time in that process when the girl or boy gains sufficient wisdom to understand what a healthy happy, relationship looks and feels like and where, or even if, consensual sex might fit into that relationship. At that point, the parent needs to step back, but not so far back that they can’t be there for their child should things go awry. Before that point, however, parents (whether it’s fathers or mothers) have to assume a certain amount of responsibility in helping their child grow into a healthy adult. We are their teachers and protectors. Of course there comes a time when they must exercise their freedom and test their new-found skills, whether it’s that first date, Prom, or finally leaving the nest to make their own way. But up until that point when my daughter was more big girl than young woman, I and her mother protected her fiercely. Even now, as an independent young woman, Lois and I give her full freedom and agency over herself…

…but we are ready to step in for her should anyone threaten her in any way. There’s a very good reason Momma bears have a fierce reputation when it comes to strangers and their cubs.
